Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Lawmakers from the Democratic party demonstrated outrage after the ex-president accused a coalition of Democratic congress members of being "turncoats" and stated they should be taken into custody and punished "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Content That Sparked the Controversy
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic congress members who previously served in armed forces or security capacities.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to protect and support this founding document," the representatives declared in the 90-second video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our laws are explicit, you can reject unlawful commands, you can decline improper directives, you have to reject illegal orders. No one has to execute commands that contravene the legal system or our founding principles."
Trump's Furious Reaction
The recorded statement appeared to provoke a furious reaction from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional post, he stated: "This is really concerning, and Dangerous to our Country. Their comments cannot be enabled to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!" He also shared a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Representatives React
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a joint declaration censuring the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they declared. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all worked our nation with exceptional patriotism and honor. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's disgusting and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and appeal to House Republicans to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also said that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately delete these unhinged social media posts and recant his violent language before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Officials' Firm Response
The representatives who participated in the video also released a response.
"We are former service members and security experts who value this country and swore an pledge to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will stop us from that sacred obligation."
"The significant point is that the president deems it punishable by execution for us to restate the statutes," they stated. "Military personnel should understand that we have their protection as they carry out their pledge to the founding principles and obligation to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our obligation."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the ex-president's requests for our execution and ideological conflict. This is a moment for moral clarity."
Additional Governmental Reactions
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's comments and posted on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the execution of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, every American β without partisan consideration β should denounce this without delay and absolutely."
The Conservative official justified Trump's allegation that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", labeling the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "It is very dangerous, you have important representatives of Congress advising troops to defy commands, I think that is without precedent in the nation's past."
The GOP official also allegedly stated to media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the crime of treason" but that "lawyers have to parse the wording and decide all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a executive branch meeting on Thursday afternoon, when questioned by a media member, "Is the president want to kill congressional representatives?", the administration spokesperson responded: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the former president is reacting to," the representative stated. "There are active officials of the federal government who worked together to orchestrate a recorded statement to members of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to disobey the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She added: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can cause casualties, it can lead to disorder, and that is exactly what these members of Congress ... are fundamentally supporting."
