The Former Congresswoman Establishes a Landmark as First Female State Leader

Over two and a half centuries, Virginia has seen seventy-four governors, each one of them male. This week, Abigail Spanberger overcame this longstanding tradition by securing the position as the first female governor in the commonwealth's records.

A Campaign Focused On Cost-of-Living Issues and Targeted Opposition

Ex- US representative and CIA operative triumphed with a campaign that stressed cost-of-living issues and carefully targeted Donald Trump's policies instead of the individual.

Beginnings and Academic Journey

Born in the Garden State on August 7, 1979, she moved to a suburb of Richmond, Virginia at thirteen. Her dad was an military serviceman who later worked in law enforcement; her mom was a nurse and volunteer.

She attended the UVA, obtaining a diploma in literary arts. Post-graduation, she had a short stint as a classroom instructor before turning to a career in public service.

“I grew up understanding that I wanted to emulate my father and I did,” she told supporters at a rally in Norfolk, Virginia recently.

Professional Path

At the federal agency, she worked cases involving narcotics, child predators and money launderers. She executed court mandates, frequently being the sole female on the arrest team. She then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and concentrated on national security, serving undercover and overseas.

Personal Crossroads

In 2014, she and her spouse, an technical professional, reached a career crossroads. Residing on the west coast, they were contemplating another foreign posting. They took out a globe and inquired of their oldest child, then in elementary school, where they should go. the commonwealth, she answered, because “everyone we love reside in Virginia”.

Spanberger shared at her rally: “And so we opted to transition from a federal career, to service to community because she was correct. Those dear to us lives in Virginia.”

Congressional Run

Back in Virginia, she joined an advocacy organization, which works against firearm incidents, and started a Girl Scout troop. In 2017, she decided to run for Congress, which people told her was a “long shot” because the party hadn't had won the seventh district in 50 years.

“But I saw what the president was implementing with his executive power and how he was pitting neighbour against neighbour. And I saw my member of Congress consistently vote to repeal the healthcare law. And I felt I had to do something. So for the record: I succeeded.”

Bipartisan Reputation

In Washington, she rapidly became linked to the Blue Dog Coalition, a collection of centrist and budget-conscious lawmakers. She focused on lower-profile issues: bringing internet access to rural areas, combating narcotics trade and support for former troops.

She built a standing for partnering with colleagues across the aisle and was often cited as the most bipartisan member of the state's congressmembers. She was outspoken about messaging that she felt turned off moderate voters, warning her party against partisan language that could be used against them in contested districts.

Political Alliance

Along with Representatives Elissa Slotkin and Mikie Sherrill, she was labeled a part of the “mod squad” in opposition to the progressive “group” of the New York representative.

Run for Governor

In November 2023, she declared she would leave Congress for a another term and would instead campaign for Virginia's leadership in the next election.

Her platform highlighted themes of civic duty, advocacy for education and infrastructure and protection of democratic institutions. Her federal service lent her authority on national security issues and she spoke of government work as a calling rather than a job.

Election Victory

This helped her to overcome rival candidate her challenger's criticisms on social topics, including the assertion that she is an extremist on individual freedoms and medical services for the LGBTQ+ community.

Spanberger, who consistently argued that local school districts should decide whether trans youth can compete in competitive sports, cast her opponent as the contender more out of step with the middle of the state's voters.
